Endocrinology
Endocrinology is the medical specialty that deals with the study, diagnosis, and treatment of hormonal disorders. The endocrinologist is also able to address the complications that may occur as a result of hormonal imbalance.
If your attending physician thinks that you may have a problem related to hormonal imbalance, you may be recommended to seek an endocrinology consultation. The endocrinologist will indicate the necessary tests for accurate diagnosis and will suggest a treatment plan adapted to your needs.
The endocrinologist treats the following common conditions:
- Couple infertility
- Micropolycystic ovary syndrome
- Menopause disorders
- Thyroid disorders
- Disorders of the calcium and phosphorous metabolism
- Osteoporosis
- Adrenal gland disorders
- Obesity
One of the most common endocrine disorders during pregnancy is hypothyroidism. It requires substitution treatment and adjustments throughout the pregnancy period.
Pregnant women diagnosed with hypothyroidism (insufficient production of thyroid hormones) need careful monitoring during their pregnancy because until week 20 of gestation the thyroid gland of the baby does not produce its own hormones but instead relies on the mother’s hormones.
Another endocrine condition that can occur in pregnancy is hyperthyroidism (excess production of thyroid hormones). This condition can be damaging both for the baby and for the mother, so it needs to be treated by administering medication that blocks the excess production of hormones.
