Infertility is the inability to conceive children after at least 1 year of unprotected sexual intercourse. In case a man cannot provide a semen sample, the urologist will conduct a testicular puncture in order to extract spermatozoa. In the eventuality that no viable spermatozoa will be found, it is recommended to first obtain semen samples from a donor and then proceed with the testicular puncture.

Internationally, research has shown that men are the ones who suffer from most infertility problems due to a range of causes: varicocele, ejaculatory duct obstruction, urogenital infections, genetic and endocrine diseases which may permanently affect the quality of the semen and result in infertility.
